I only have older Dell's myself but included some ideas on how to check for standard ACPI support in the documentation.
I think the newer Dell's probably respond to standard ACPI fan control methods from what I have read on forums and that is probably preferable to use. It supports the same models as i8kutils, it's based on the same low level interface as i8kutils and dellfand but has some new features. You might be interested to read the documentation for fanxdell, an alternative fan control program which I wrote myself.
